The Umatilla Chemical Depot will lay off 34 employees as it prepares to shut down operations.

In all, the company has eliminated 52 jobs this year at the closing U.S. Army depot. Its shutdown began shortly after workers incinerated the site’s last ton of mustard agent in October 2011.

The layoffs are a setback for Umatilla County’s jobs base, which gained 290 jobs between July 2011 and July 2012. The northeast Oregon county’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate climbed to 8.7 percent in July, matching the statewide average. About 3,350 Umatilla County workers were unemployed that month, according to Oregon Employment Department estimates.
