The Oregon State Fair’s 150th anniversary is expected to turn a slight profit during its 11-day run, but the rest of the year has funding issues.
State officials expect the Oregon State Fair and Expo Center to lose $3.44 million in the current two-year budget. Lottery funds are used to cover the loss. Lottery funds also are used to repay bonds that were used to repair buildings on the fairgrounds and build the 5,000-seat Pavilion.
Officials with the state Parks and Recreation Department are determined to narrow that financial gap. The operating budget for this year’s edition was cut by 17 percent, from $4 million to $3.34 million.
