Office Depot has opened its first Pacific Northwest small-format store in its downtown Portland location.

At about one-quarter of the size of its typical stores, the new format feels more like a convenience store and has slightly fewer offerings, though many more green-leaning options. The Portland location will be Office Depot’s first small-format store in the Pacific Northwest; other have opened in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Florida and New Jersey.

Office Depot, which has been at that location for 13 years, said it uses energy savings lights in the store, as well as repurposed shelving and fixtures and recycled carpets. Around 900, or 16 percent of the store’s merchandise will have some environmental aspect — say, school notebook paper made from sugar canes — or will feature an eco-label.
