Auditors found there are dozens more boards and commissions than the 218 listed in the Governor’s Office Boards and Commissions Book.
The audit concludes that Oregon does not have a clearly defined system for maintaining and managing its myriad citizen boards and commissions, which range from high-powered boards like the Oregon Liquor Control Commission and the Oregon Investment Council down to tiny boards with few staff like the Mortuary and Cemetery Board or the Advisory Council on Hearing Aids.
“Boards play an important role in Oregon’s government,” Brown said. “However, it is not always clear how these boards and their members are to be held accountable for fulfilling their missions and using state resources.”
