The arrival of a Japanese dock on Agate Beach in Newport earlier this month “can be considered a wake-up call,” according to Jessica Miller, an Oregon State University marine ecologist.

The dock was confirmed to be debris from the tsunami that struck Japan last year. Although no one knows exactly how much debris was washed into the ocean by that tsunami, according to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, it is considered to be one of the largest single collections of marine debris in history.
