The last time the Olympic Track and Field Trials came to Eugene, nearby businesses prepared for a windfall of customers that never came.

Business owners are banding together to avoid a repeat of the 2008 fiasco.

Not only did the hoped-for new guests not show up, the regulars stayed away in droves, spooked by fears of heavy traffic and parking problems near Hayward Field, [Studio One Cafe owner Chris Hogle] said.

Hogle was one of the first to sign on to what has now become the Hayward Historic District business association.“First and foremost, we just wanted a different outcome to the Olympic Trials than what happened before,” he said. This means getting the word out to local customers that “it’s a great time to come down and enjoy the area,” said Hogle, who has become the unofficial spokesman for the group.
