Lane County released a new budget with deep cuts including the loss of 131 jail beds and more than 200 jobs.

In what is most likely the bleakest revenue picture in more than a decade, the county faces the elimination of the federal Secure Rural Schools Act funds that had replaced money once generated by timber sales in the days before habitat issues and overcutting almost shut down logging on federal lands.

The budget plan would eliminate 224 full-time-equivalent jobs, leaving the county staff at its lowest level since 1990, when there were 70,000 fewer people living here.
