Urban Airship calls the new service “Segments,” and it will be available as a feature that software developers can add to their own mobile apps. Users who sign up will receive a message, coupon or invite when they’re near a predetermined location.
It’s both an inviting service and an intimidating one, bringing customers and brands ever closer while testing the boundaries of personal privacy.
Location-aware technology is one of the hottest things going among mobile apps right now, and Urban Airship hopes it’s one more way to make smartphones more valuable for both advertisers and shoppers.
