The Port of Tillamook Bay is building a $6.9 million hangar for Near Space, a suborbital flight provider.
The facility will let NSC consolidate its engineering, manufacturing and flight operations at a single location. It is expected to be the first commercial, high-altitude balloon flight facility in the world.
“This will allow us to manufacture longer balloons and increase our capacity to address the growing needs of our customers,” said Eric Byers, project manager for NSC. “Now we can take the balloons directly from the payload integration center to the launch circle.”
The 32,000-square-foot facility, designed by LRS Architects, will feature a 300-foot-long hangar, a 575-foot-tall observation tower and a large balloon launch circle, where NSC will launch high-pressure and zero-pressure balloons that can weigh thousands of kilograms.
