A lobbyist for Facebook told the Oregon Legislature that the company requires property tax exemption for its Prineville data center if it is to stay in Oregon.
In testimony before a panel of lawmakers, a lobbyist for the giant social media company said the Legislature should pass a law that exempts the data center from property taxes assessed by the state because it was promised 15 years of tax breaks.
Facebook invested heavily in the data center, which stores pages for millions of users of the popular photo- and comment-sharing site, said Corey Owens, who manages state and local policy for the company. The payoff has been dozens of jobs and the potential for more, he said.
“At that level of investment, we need certainty” on property taxes, Owens said.
