Young shoppers are increasingly looking to buy local for economic and emotional reasons.

“There’s a generation that’s trying to figure out their consumer behaviors, and shopping locally seems to be something they want to try to do,” said Evon Smith, second-generation owner of the Smith Family Bookstore. “They’re looking at their own local community and trying to commit to living well within that community.”

About 38,000 local, independent businesses in cities across the country launched a “Shift Your Shopping” campaign earlier this month.

The increased interest in the “local” label was borne out of a distrust of large-scale business models, said Steve Mital, who directs the University of Oregon’s office of sustainability. “Fewer moving parts, small scale and local make us feel better.
