Downtown Salem’s independent bookstore, The Book Bin, has profited from Borders’ demise.

The American Booksellers Association, a trade group for independents, reported that members saw sales jump by 16 percent during Thanksgiving week compared with last year.

“We knew that everyone who used to go to Borders would come here looking for Christmas gifts,” said [manager Kat Baird], 30, one busy evening at the store last week.
