About 3,000 jobless Oregonians have reached the final extensions on their unemployment benefits. 500 more are expected to run out of their benefits this week, and the trend will continue in the coming weeks.

The employment picture has started to brighten slightly in recent months, but the jobless rate remains high, both statewide and in Lane County.

Oregon’s unemployment rate was 11.9 percent in July, and has been close to 12 percent over the past five months. In Lane County, the jobless rate was 12.5 percent in July, down half a percentage point from June. About 23,000 Lane County residents are unemployed.
