A recent survey shows Oregon voters may vote to uphold the Legislature’s tax increases.
A public opinion survey of 500 likely voters showed that 62 percent were in favor of the Legislature’s tax increases for high earners.
But a tax-increase critic was skeptical of that finding — and recent history suggests that voters will reject such measures if they are on a Jan. 26 ballot.
Still, a policy analyst for the Oregon Center for Public Policy, a think tank based in Silverton, said times may have changed since the earlier defeats in 2003 and 2004.
“Oregonians clearly favor protecting funding for education, health and public safety,” said OCPP’s Joy Margheim. “On the whole, they appear to believe that the Legislature came up with a balanced and fair solution to the state’s fiscal crisis brought on by the recession.”
