ROSEBURG — North River Boats could be working with a very important returning customer for years to come. The U.S. Navy has entered into a $440,000 contract for the construction of five identical 26-foot utility boats. The company’s general manager, Jay Conn, believes that there will be more to come. “Once the Navy sees our ability to produce these boats they will continue to award us the contracts for more,” he says with a bit of a swagger.

The boats are not much different from the ones North River normally makes, just with added military guidelines.

The Navy contract originally went to Almar Boats in Tacoma, Wash., but because of a recent merger between the two companies, they are being manufactured in Southern Oregon. To keep up with this workload, North River has hired three additional employees and could see that trend continue if more contracts come in.
