Best laid stadium plans flop


Portland’s urban renewal and stadium plans hit the wall of public opinion.

Portland has plans for urban renewal that allowed for moving the Beavers’ baseball stadium, but public opinion has blocked two of the possibilities. It’s not the first time that well-intentioned city planners failed to get the public on board with their plans.

One painful lesson to be learned from the failure to site a new Triple-A baseball stadium in the Rose Quarter or Lents Park is that the public doesn’t necessarily support – or even know about – the official plans that the city has drawn up for its urban renewal areas.

Portland’s redevelopment plans support building a stadium in either location – generally in the Rose Quarter and specifically in Lents Park.
