Praise for clunkers bill

The U.S. Congress has passed a bill that will encourage consumers to get rid of their gas guzzlers for more fuel-efficient models. Under the bill, people with poor-gas-mileage cars would be able to obtains vouchers towards the purchase of better vehicles.

The $1 billion program, included as an amendment to war-funding legislation, passed the Senate on Thursday and awaits President Obama’s signature. It is intended to stimulate the economy by getting consumers to buy new cars, and provide a boost to the auto industry, which is suffering through its worst year in nearly 30 years.

Consumers with older, poor-gas-mileage cars can obtain vouchers of $3,500 to $4,500, that are applied against the price of a new, more fuel-efficient car. Dealers say the program should help push consumers off the couch and into showrooms.
