The number of temporary holiday jobs in Portland is up for the first time in several years.

“I would say that we’re looking to have a little bit better holiday season than we did last year,” said Katrina Green, general manager of the Washington Square Penney’s store. “If we’re hiring more associates, we’re expecting more customers.”

Bolstering retail revenues may be the continuation of deep holiday discount started during recent down holiday seasons.

“I think the deep discounts are here to stay,” said Portland State business professor Tom Gillpatrick. “Given our economy, the value market, the discount market is growing. We see this all around and retailers of all stripes are working to serve this.”
