Holiday hiring in 2012 reached its highest level in six years.

Retail employment showed a net gain of 728,300 jobs from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, [Chicago consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas] said in a news release. The hiring figure increased more than 10 percent compared to the same period in 2011, and was the highest gain since 2006.

Retailers typically hire additional workers at the end of the year in anticipation of holiday shopping. In an analysis, Challenger, Gray & Christmas said the figures may have been influenced by “Black Friday” falling earlier in November than usual and thus providing more shopping days and the need for more workers. The day after Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday shopping rush; it occurred in 2012 on Nov. 23, the earliest date possible.
