Borders Group is beginning court approved liquidation sales at its 399 stores today, including those in the Portland area.

Fred Bruning, chief executive of CenterCal Properties that owns Bridgeport Village, said Thursday that he’s already fielded inquiries about his mall’s soon-to-be empty Borders space from its competitors Barnes & Noble and Books-a-Million Inc.

Books-a-Million is negotiating with Borders to buy as many as 35 of its stores — a move that could save up to 1,500 jobs. The deal makes sense for Books-A-Million, as it could be easier for Borders’ former landlords to lease out vacant spaces to similar retailers, said Morningstar analyst Peter Wahlstrom.
