Eileen Brady, co-founder of New Seasons Market, formally announced her 2012 bid for Portland mayor.
Brady joins former city Commissioner Charlie Hales as the only two viable candidates to declare — so far — for next May’s primary election, anticipated to be Portland’s most competitive mayoral race in decades. Mayor Sam Adams hasn’t announced plans but is expected to seek re-election, and others — such as Multnomah County Chairman Jeff Cogen and former city Commissioner Jim Francesconi — are openly considering runs.
The 49-year-old is perhaps best known for her ties to the chic grocery chain New Seasons, which she and her husband, Brian Rohter, co-founded with two other families. But while Rohter handled day-to-day oversight of the company, Brady gained sustainability and health credentials as a vice president for Ecotrust, chairwoman for green coupon distributor Chinook Book, and as a board member for state health initiatives.
