The economy has turned many gardeners’ focus from flowers to food, and nurseries are adjusting to the change.

The economy has turned many gardeners’ focus from flowers to food, and nurseries are adjusting to the change.

Ross Penhallegon, a horticultural agent with the Oregon State University Extension Service, said 56 people attended a beginner’s garden seminar in Lane County a few weekends ago at the Extension Services office. More people are constantly asking about how to start gardens, he said.

“People can’t justify growing flowers anymore, but they can justify growing food,” he said.

Gardeners have felt the pinch throughout the recession, and so have the nurseries that supply them.
