Portland International Airport’s passenger volumes are up 4.5% over last year, signaling a positive sign for the regional economy.

“This is really huge,” [executive director of the Port of Portland Bill] Wyatt told the Port commission, noting that the number is still unofficial. The tally builds on the 2 percent increase reported in August.

The back-to-back increases suggest “fall is going to be very strong,” he said. “It’s a very positive sign for the economy. I’ve always believed that passenger volumes reflect what’s happening in the economy.”

What’s odd, he noted, is that passenger volumes have increased even though airline capacity has stabilized after a period of decline. “Where are they putting them?”
