Silverton’s historic downtown has a vacancy rate of 25%, prompting concerns from the city and business owners.

The conceptual Downtown Master Plan aims to attract new businesses to the 21 empty storefronts with landscaping, design, signage and more.

“The Downtown Master Plan looks at infrastructure improvements and other strategies that can be used to attract and retain new businesses downtown,” said Silverton Community Development Director Steve Kay. “It looks block by block what the character of the area is.”

While all may be quiet on the streets now, Kay said he hopes to move forward on a plan that would transform one or two downtown blocks within a year. This would serve as an example of what the entire core could look like and possibly attract new business owners, Kay said.
