A group of business owners have drafted a plan to improve foot traffic in downtown Salem.

The Downtown Partnership, a group of downtown stake holders, has come up with some conceptual drawings to illustrate the transformation of downtown traffic lanes to a more pedestrian-friendly environment using something called a “road diet.”

By squeezing Commercial and Liberty streets NE from four lanes to two, effectively lowering downtown’s caloric intake, the group says traffic will be forced to use other routes such as Front or 12th streets.
