Caucasian males have the most success when trying to secure a doctor appointment, a study by Portland State University and Oakland University economists reveals.

Their conclusion was made after contacting a random sampling of doctors seeking an appointment as a white self-pay male and a Hispanic woman on Medicaid.

They found that a white male self-pay patient was able to get an appointment 70 percent of the time. A Hispanic woman on Medicaid, the profile with the lowest access, was offered an appointment only 14 percent of the time.

“The project started out because the Affordable Care Act is probably the biggest health policy change since introduction of Medicare and Medicaid in terms of financing health care in U.S.,” said Rajiv Sharma, associate professor at PSU and the study’s lead author. “As a health economist, I and my long-time collaborator thought it was a good opportunity to do some interesting research.”
