Portland falls in terms of largest TV markets

Charlotte, N.C. surpasses Portland, which dropped to No. 24 in the Nielsen market viewer estimates.

Where cities land on the list determines how much companies can negotiate for advertising rates.

Many large companies limit advertising to the top 10, 20 or 25 cities.

Portland has 1,136,320 viewers in its territory, or 1.003 percent of the U.S. market. The figure is just ahead of Raleigh-Durham, according to Nielsen.

Eugene placed 119th on the list at 232,860; Medford-Klamath Falls took the No. 140 spot with 164,120 TV homes (0.145% of the US); Bend was 190th on the list with 64,580 TV homes.

New York is the No. 1 market with 7,368,320 TV homes at 6.503% of the US. Seattle is No. 14 behind markets like Detroit, Atlanta and Tampa.
