Documents filed with federal agencies indicate Levi Strauss & Co., is looking to downsize its Eugene operation.

Up to 150 positions could be cut, according to the Register-Guard.

The company employed about 250 employees locally when it was named Business of the Year in 2011, the most recent figures available. The Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce cited the company for, among other things, increasing employment that year by 42 percent at its services center at 3125 Chad Drive. Levi Strauss declined to comment on any staff reductions at its Eugene office, or specify how many employees currently work there.

The prolonged recession took a toll on the San Francisco based apparel company, however, as it did on many retailers, according to company filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Among the challenges the company faces, it said in recent filings, are intense global competition from a number of other companies, including some that “are larger and have more resources than we do in the markets in which we operate.”

Restructuring would save up to $200 million, the company said in the R-G report.
