Hanjin leaving Portland will cost the the local economy $83 million.
Erik Siemers of the Portland Business Journal, describes the economic impact of the decision:
Three different carriers offer service delivering import and export cargo from the port’s Terminal 6, but Hanjin accounted for 78 percent of the container traffic — a weekly average of 1,600 containers, according to port data.
Of the 964 workers directly employed at T6, Hanjin supports 657 of them. It’s service — which delivers key exports like hay and timber products east to Asia and imports from Les Schwab tires to Nike sneakers — supports an estimated $83 million in in revenue from local businesses and $33 million in annual wages. The company generates and estimated $12 million in state and local taxes.
