News is being made on both sides of highway 30 in Northwest Portland as groups are seeking to develop the space south of the highway, turning empty space into two buildings that will house a total of 370 new apartments.

From OregonLive.com:

“It’s a marquee site, and it’s going to be a marquee building for the neighborhood,” said Tom DiChiara, a principal at Cairn Pacific.

The developer, in a partnership with the real estate firm Capstone Partners, would also renovate an office building largely vacated by Con-way. And it would also build an underground, 600-stall parking garage that spans three blocks to accommodate Con-way employees as well as residents of the new buildings.

On the other side of the highway, a business’ success is forcing it to restructure as Grand Central Bakery plans to close its cafe. The popular bread company has decided to turn the space into a production facility.

President and co-owner Ben Davis said the bakery is “bursting at the seams,” with working and baking happening 24 hours a day. The extra square footage in the remodeled warehouse (nicknamed Sawtooth because of its ripsaw roofline) will allow for more space for an oven hearth, proofing and packing.

The bakery opened up shop in the warehouse in 2007 to house all of Grand Central’s artisan-bread production for Portland, its central offices and a café. The café will close March 31, adding at least 2,000 square feet to the 13,000-square-foot facility.
