The Legislature passed a bill last week that defines what events are allowed at wineries and also limits the amount of nonwine sales.

The bill is an attempt to appease the interests of wine growers, environmentalists and agriculture groups alike.

Senate Bill 1055 “solidifies and clarifies activities you’re allowed to do, which is a good thing,” said Mark Wisnovsky of Valley View Vineyards in Ruch. “Until now, different things were allowed on county and state levels, with many wineries going beyond what’s necessary to make wine.”

Before the legislative session began Feb. 2, some area vintners’ hackles were raised when the state Department of Land Conservation and Development asked the State Board of Agriculture to rein in nonwine-related events.
