The fate of the ride-sharing company in Oregon’s state capital could be decided tonight at the Salem City Council meeting.

Uber, which connects riders with drivers through smartphones, has been operating in Salem since July, although it is not licensed to do so. The company has not been cited for this infraction because, in a rare move, it offers all rides in Salem for free.

As of November, Uber also operates in Eugene, Gresham, Beaverton, Hillsboro and Tigard — closing in on Portland, one of the largest cities in America that does not allow the ride-share service.
