The Portland-based bike-sharing company was purchased by Bikeshare Holdings for about $40 million.

Bikeshare Holdings, a group of private investors led by the CEOs of New York real estate giant Related and fitness firm Equinox, announced that it had bought Alta Bicycle Share. The sale was reportedly made in order to save New York’s Citi Bike fleet from going under.

Alta, run by former Portland bike planner Mia Birk, also operated bike-sharing in Chicago, the Bay Area, Chattanooga, Toronto, Washington, D.C., Boston and Melbourne, Australia.
