Tualatin councilors want to temporarily ban medical marijuana dispensaries while staff comes up with a regulatory plan.
This comes after the derailment of a contentious proposal that would have allowed the city to revoke licenses from businesses violating local, state and federal laws. Oregon legislators voted to legalize and regulate medical marijuana dispensaries earlier this year. Medical marijuana remains illegal under federal law.
Instead of focusing on business licenses — as Medford had — councilors now want to look at zoning and land use rules to keep such businesses out. This approach would minimize where dispensaries can go, and could also prohibit storefronts and signs for such businesses.
