SolarWorld’s Bosch Solar Energy acquisition makes the company’s Hillsboro jobs more secure by cutting purchasing costs, a spokesman says.

Ben Santarris, SolarWorld Industries America Inc. spokesman in Hillsboro, said the deal announced Tuesday will boost economies of scale, reducing supply prices globally.

“It puts our total capacity at levels that are comparable to our competitors and therefore we have similar economies of scale,” Santarris said. “It bolsters our position as the principal non-Chinese producer in the world.”

Bonn-based SolarWorld’s Hillsboro factory employs almost 700 who make advanced high-wattage solar cells and modules. The German parent company flirted with insolvency last summer, but bondholders agreed to take a hit as part of a restructuring and debt-for-equity swap.
