SolarWorld, which employs more than 600 in a Hillsboro factory, has suffered along with other solar businesses from a global glut and declining prices, as well as competition from China that the company considers unfair. Some other big solar companies have filed for insolvency. Therefore the acquisition would be significant as SolarWorld tries to fix its finances.
A SolarWorld spokesman declined to comment on the potential purchase of the German plant, which has about 1,800 workers. Last month the company confirmed it was consolidating its U.S. operations in Hillsboro while replacing its top U.S. executives.
