Oregon Lottery director Larry Niswender is retiring, and Gov. John Kitzhaber is set to name a replacement soon.

Oregon Lottery director Larry Niswender is retiring, and Gov. John Kitzhaber is set to name a replacement soon.

Kitzhaber has had a mixed relationship with the lottery and state-run gambling. In the early 1990s, as Oregon Senate president, he helped ensure the state could introduce video poker machines, which led to a streak in new revenue. As governor, however, he strenuously opposed expansion of gambling within the state.

Niswender has served 35 years with the state in various capacities. The last few have been rocky, however.
