Retailers are optimistic that the Halloween season will bring big business for costumes, candy and decorations this year.

A number of Portland-area pumpkin patches opened this month, and pop-up costume store Spirit Halloween boasts 15 Oregon locations.

Total spending on Halloween is expected to reach $6.9 billion this year, according to the NRF survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, with the average shopper projected to spend $75.03. Last year, consumers spent an average of $79.82.
