A nuclear meltdown occurs when a nuclear reactor overheats, causing severe damage. Now scientists at Oregon State University are testing a new type of “superhot” nuclear reactor design that operates at temperatures above 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, about three times as hot as existing reactors.

Positive cash flow

Venture capitalists pumped $70.4 million into Oregon companies in the first quarter of 2013, a 142% increase over the same quarter in 2012 and equal to 80% of what Washington firms raked in.

Winning display

0613 FOB AmorphyxFor the past two decades, the liquid display industry has revolved around thin film transistors: semiconductor devices that are manufactured on one of the two glass panels that make up an LCD display. Now a Corvallis-based startup, Amorphyx, has developed an alternative to the transistor, which acts as a dimmer switch controlling the amount of light coming through the display screen.
