Cutbacks hamper Wallowa County’s growth
Wallowa County, in Oregon’s northeast corner, has had an up-and-down employment history. It gained jobs for the second consecutive year in 2005, but total nonfarm employment has yet to fully recover from previous losses.
Good times: Employment ads on the increase
Since early 2003, employment ads at Oregon newspapers, despite seasonal shifts, have been building steam. The drop in the unemployment rate from above 8% to below 6% during the period could be both a symptom of hiring activity and a hindrance to filling jobs.
