Since early 2003, employment ads at Oregon newspapers, despite seasonal shifts, have been building steam. The drop in the unemployment rate from above 8% to below 6% during the period could be both a symptom of hiring activity and a hindrance to filling jobs.
Since early 2003, employment ads at Oregon newspapers, despite seasonal shifts, have been building steam. The drop in the unemployment rate from above 8% to below 6% during the period could be both a symptom of hiring activity and a hindrance to filling jobs. Compared to the prior year, The Oregonian placed 19% more ads in 2004, and 16% more ads in 2005, while Eugene’s Register-Guard placed 31% and 14% more ads in 2004 and 2005, respectively. This may be part of a regional comeback, as the rate of job openings in Western states has generally surpassed that of the United States overall for the past 20 months. There were 15% more U.S. job openings year-over-year in 2005, but 23% more Western-region openings. | |
