In August 2024, Willamette Valley Medical Center (WVMC) introduced advanced video remote interpretation services through AMN Language Services, revolutionizing patient communication by facilitating conversations in patients’ preferred languages. This innovation ensures high-quality interpreters are available on demand, eliminating delays that could compromise patient care.

Language barriers—such as those faced by Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals or patients who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing—can hinder understanding between patients and caregivers. The new system provides access to interpreters fluent in hundreds of languages within seconds, with most interactions enhanced by video connectivity. This visual component strengthens the connection between patients and medical professionals, fostering greater understanding and trust.

Since implementing the AMN Language equipment, WVMC has experienced a remarkable increase in usage, logging over 2,000 minutes in August and by November logging 4,989 minutes across the facility. Patients now receive vital healthcare information in their primary language more consistently and efficiently than ever.

How it Works – When the system is activated, 48 of the most commonly languages spoken are prominently displays for immediate selection. With a single tap, an interpreter appears on-screen, identified by their name and ID number, and the conversation begins. This seamless interaction allows healthcare providers to communicate critical information through the interpreter, enabling timely and informed medical decisions.

“It’s amazing. Easy to use and I have used it for patients speaking Spanish, Russian, Taiwanese, and more. This technology supports us to deliver the best care no matter what language a patient speaks.” Stephanie Perez, RN Short Stay Services.

For languages not displayed, the system’s Auto Language Concierge feature ensures swift connection to the appropriate interpreter, guaranteeing no language is left unsupported. This cutting-edge solution underscores WVMC’s commitment to equitable, patient-centered care.
