The Oregon Zoo is expecting lion cubs for the first time in several decades.

Cubs, of course, would be a big draw for visitors. But no one is certain how Neka, a 6-year-old lioness and first-time mother-to-be, will react either during the birth or with newborns. First-time mothers are sometimes aggressive with cubs or don’t nurture them as they need to.

Yet, lion cubs are precisely what zoo officials hoped for when they opened the $6.8-million, 2.5-acre Predators of the Serengeti exhibit in September 2009. It had gone 11 years without lions in its collection and visitors routinely wondered where they were.
