While other stores are folding under pressure from big-name chains, some local groceries like Sherm’s Food 4 Less are managing to survive.
The Medford-based company is family-run and has retained a loyal following by listening to customer advice.
In a market with plenty of competition, Food 4 Less has parlayed low prices, responsiveness to customer requests and heavy community involvement into a business that has thrived — and even grown — amid the recession, drawing clients who once eschewed its cavernous aisles.
“The whole valley has grown exponentially in the last 15 years,” says Elizabeth Fujas of Rising Sun Farms in Phoenix, whose organic products are available in the natural foods department. “It’s nice to have every segment of the grocery business covered and Sherm’s is where a lot of people shop.”
