Portland’s small independent movie theaters evolve to survive.

Today, though, independent theaters face new obstacles. The ever-expanding range of home viewing options is a big one. And the increasing prevalence of “day-and-date” releases, in which a film is available on demand through cable TV or online, sometimes even before its Portland release, is another problem, especially when a lot of the movies released this way are the foreign and independent titles non-corporate theaters depend on.

Hollywood studios have adapted to these changes by going big and playing safe, betting on 3-D special effects and choosing sequels, remakes and adaptations of comic books, best-selling novels, video games and other known quantities over original ideas. National chains lure customers with an experience larger and louder than any home theater can provide.
