[Organic farmer Steve Fry] said his farm uses drip irrigation systems, which he thinks minimizes the risk of contamination for farmers who coax organic beets, carrots and onions out of the earth. Fry said the standards proposed by the FDA are unattainable without the extreme expense of essentially resorting to tap water for irrigation.
“I’ll stop farming if I have to chlorinate,” Fry said. “Dirt is the enemy to the FDA, but some of us embrace the soil.”
