Eastern Oregon has higher rates of upward income mobility than other parts of the state, a new study shows. The study tracks the opportunities people have to move up in income depending on where they were born.
People from John Day have a one in seven chance of moving upward economically. People born in Portland have one in eleven chance.
Economists still don’t know why certain areas are more economically mobile than others. However, they’re exploring a number of factors. For instance, they’re looking into whether income segregation plays a role. That’s when people of higher incomes are less likely to interact with lower income people.
