Only about 40 fewer workers applied for jobless benefits in Oregon last week than the week before. That’s out of 6,100 weekly applications.

The count fluctuates from week to week — sometimes significantly. In fact, initial claims in Oregon spiked 25 percent in mid-July, then fell by the same amount the next week. And then, last week, they barely budged.

The decline was much more noticeable nationally. U.S. jobless claims decreased by 19,000 to a seasonally adjusted 326,000. Federal officials say that’s the lowest weekly count since January 2008.

In all, Oregon sent out 40,300 state-funded unemployment checks last week, down 600 from the week before and 5,500 from a year ago.
