RV dealer goes small to survive


A Bend RV dealer switches to smaller vehicles and downsizes its staff to stay in the game.

While other RV businesses are still hurting, Bend-based Big Country RV was recently named one of the top 50 dealerships in the U.S. and Canada by RV Business Magazine – an indication of the company’s financial stability, among other things.

Big Country managed to stay afloat by changing its inventory to smaller vehicles and downsizing the company.

“It really is exciting, especially for a dealer like us in Bend,” said [co-owner] Gary Craven, referring to the roughly 3,800 RV dealers — mostly in larger markets — eligible for the award.

Craven said the award also is noteworthy for its timing. He said it’s not an easy time to sell RVs, and hasn’t been for more than a year, but he sees some encouraging signs.
