Construction firms and trade unions foresee hiring many new young workers in the next few years.

So industry leaders are trying to tee up interest and hands-on skills among today’s high school students. They report clear signs of interest from teens who like to work with their hands — and light up at the prospects of working in a field where pay averages $51,000.

One example: A new pre-apprenticeship program has local teens out on job sites this month pouring and finishing sidewalks, witnessing construction of a massive interstate bridge over the Sandy River and otherwise seeing firsthand the work that skilled construction workers do.
